Rio, Brazil to Antigua, Guatemala, February 13, 2018

I was awake at 4 - much too early but couldn't go back to sleep.  I knew it would make for a very long day, especially with a 4 hour time gain.  The neighbor drove me to the airport at 5:30 and the streets were very crowded with people just leaving the Sambodromo!  It is a crazy place!

My first flight was from Rio to Bogota, Colombia which is 5 and a half hours and 4556 km.  Avianca is a first rate airline.  We had two meals and free alcohol plus they have great movies and individual tvs at each seat.  My second flight was from Bogota to San Jose, Costa Rica.  That was 1242 km.  An hour later, I was on my way to Guatemala City which is 888 km away.  In total I flew 6686 km.  I got to Guatemala City on time and very quickly had my luggage, was through customs and sitting in the shuttle waiting for the other passenger to arrive.  We waited and waited and waited.  Finally, an hour later, we left without him.

Once in Antigua, the driver took me to my homestay-

but it was complicated to know which bell to ring.  Luckily a man also staying with Dona Marta Julia came along, knew my name and let me in-

Behind the main door is a road? walkway? street?  and there are 7 homes on it-

We live at #7-

The front yard-

leads to the front door-

and into the livingroom-

My bedroom is off the livingroom-

My closet and the curtain that hangs on my entry door-

I also have a bathroom-

The kitchen is well equipped and off the livingroom-

There are two other guests staying here:  a woman from Toronto and a man from Phoenix.  Marta is a great cook and very talkative and friendly.  She speaks really quickly so I have to listen carefully but I know I'm going to learn a lot from her.  Already it's so different from where I stayed last year - so much better even though I have a 2.5 km walk to school!  It costs $17/day and that includes lodging and three meals/day except Sundays.  It's pretty cheap living.  Looking forward to my first day of classes and volunteering tomorrow.
