Roatan, Honduras, March 7, 2017

Our day started walking along the beach-

Our hotel is at the end just past the trees-

Along the way-

We did a dive and saw a gigantic coral reef, big trigger fish, a large file fish and schools of tang.  It was great!  We dove with 2 couples from Lucky Lake!

Back at our room, the maid had been busy-

We scootered over to West End for lunch, then came back for......

Happy Hour!  More Monkey Lalas!  I'm getting a bit sick of them though, they are so sweet.  I'm going to have to find something else-

Looking forward to another dive and then a visit to a botanical garden tomorrow.

Roatan, Honduras, March 6, 2017

We went for a scooter tour before breakfast. We needed gas so filled up and while in the convenience store, a man said hi.  He looked sort of familiar but I didn't think anything of it.  We were buying beer so we were taking awhile when all of a sudden he was there again, with another helmet for Carolyn.  When I picked up the bike, there were only 2 helmets left and hers was too big.  I don't know if he travels with extra helmets or went back to the shop.  Not sure, but that's pretty good service and she now has a good fitting helmet.

There are a few nice homes along quiet streets looking out to the ocean.  Lots have pools in front too but quite a few were vacant.  Just holiday homes I guess-

Cruise ships arrive every day, in fact over 13,000 people - gross! could invade on Wednesday!  Today only 2 boats were scheduled but we saw 3.  It makes for a busy island and inflated prices.  This is one we saw today-

This time we not only found a sign, we found the actual sign company.  This one is going to West Bay which is where we're staying-

After diving, which was really good: we saw a monster green eel, shrimp, a pretty big grouper that hung out for awhile, as well as lots of smaller colorful life, we scootered part way across the island to Daniel Johnson's monkey and sloth sanctuary.  It took awhile to find it and somehow the man we asked at a gas station beat us there and a woman, Daniel's cousin???, who gave us further directions, phoned to let them know two women on a scooter were coming, so they stayed open for us.  How's that for small town?

There are only 8 species at the sanctuary but all pens are clean and spacious and the animals seem healthy and calm.  Two raccoons, who are not native to the island, were enjoying their day-

Rat type rabbits called Central American agoutis infest Roatan but at least they are good to eat:  apparently they taste better than chicken!!

Carolyn let the creepy Capuchin monkies walk all over her-

I wouldn't let them anywhere near me!  We weren't allowed in the spider monkey cage-

Their claws are nasty-

And "Tony" went nuts when a black guy came close to his pen.  Our guide said they don't like blacks for some reason.  I guess they're not color blind!

The Yellow Napped Parrot can be trained to talk, likes fruit and nibbles on sunflower seeds all day-

The Scarlet Macaw was supposed to land on my hand but opted for my head instead.  I kept thinking he was going to peck out my eyes-

The Military, or Green Macaw did the same thing to Carolyn-

''

The highlight for me was seeing a sloth.  They move very slowly so their only defence is camouflage-

They have this weird stripe down their back.  At first I thought he had had some kind of back surgery-

Their claws are very long and they use them for digging-

They have a perma grin.  I guess they've figured out that living in this sanctuary on this lovely island, getting plenty of food, water and hugs all day is the life-

Two people are required to pass a sloth to a third person.  Their arms are held up and the new cuddler slides in underneath so the sloth can put his hands on your shoulders.  You can pet it everywhere except it's head-

They are cute, kind of-

The scooter ride back home was faster and uneventful.  The sky was grey and it had rained in some spots but we made it home dry and safely.  And, wouldn't you know it - Happy Hour - again!

The sun was setting as we sat on the deck guzzling Monkey Lalas!

Looking forward to more diving tomorrow!

Roatan, Honduras, el cinco de marzo, 2017

We caught the Utila Dream ferry to Roatan.  It is a large and modern boat but the sea was rough so it felt like a wild ride at the fair.  Quite a few people were puking, but luckily, we didn't!

Once in Coxen Hole, rather than pay $15 US for a taxi to our hotel, we took a collectivo for $1 US each to West End, then a water taxi for $3 US each to our hotel in West Bay.  Water taxis make frequent trips back and forth between West End and West Bay-

Happy hour is from 3-6 and we've discovered a new drink.  It's a Monkey LaLa: vodka, Baileys, Kahlua, Eagle Brand (I know!!!!) and coconut milk - all blended with chocolate syrup on top.  It's AWESOME!!! And you get 2 for $6!!!  We spent most of happy hour a block or two down from our hotel-

There isn't much beach but there are lots of people - on chairs and in the water-

Supper was calamari and butterfly coconut shrimp - wow!

I've rented a scooter for the week so we hope to do a lot of exploring as well as diving.  I'm really looking forward to my time here!

Utila, Honduras el 2 a 5 marzo, 2017

Time moves pretty slowly on Utila.  We had a great room at an excellent hotel but the diving was only so so.  Utila is popular because cheap diving courses are available.  Aquatic life is sparse but there are some corals.  I wasn't very impressed, which is why I only did 4 dives.

However, there are a few interesting sites around town.  First is RJ's.  It's a restaurant that is only open 3 evenings a week.  I had kingfish and it came with coleslaw, pork and beans (not even frijoles), rice, potatoes and garlic bread.  The fish was excellent  Dessert was skor/caramel/chocolate cake-

Wandering around we came upon Jade Seahorse which is a weird complex with a garden of mosaic type statues and floors-

They are made from broken pieces of ceramic tile and old bottles.  There's also a great view-

There are weird statues-

Dragons-

Walls-

and rentable cabins-

There's a cool piece built from old computer parts too-

I can't imagine the hours put into building this outdoor art gallery!

Another interesting place Is Camponado Alley.  Lots of locals live along this street but it's built in a swamp!  Gross-

The kids do have a soccer field to play on-

We had a beer on the nice deck of Utila Lodge-

I've enjoyed my time at Utila but I'm looking forward to a bit "more" tomorrow at Roatan!

Utila, Honduras, el primero de marzo, 2017

We went diving this morning at 7:30-

The bay is very calm but once past, it's really rough-

We went to the north side of the island first, then the second dive was at a closer place with a swim through.  We didn't see a lot of fish, but we did see a large turtle, lots of parrot fish in all stages of maturity, a three foot green eel, a black and white eel just peeking out of a hole, a huge crab hiding under a rock, Angel fish, a large and small cow fish, a huge school of blue and black Tang, lots of small fish of all colors: yellow, neon blue, black, yellow, grey, white and orange.  The coral is mostly yellow and brown with some purple and other bright colors. The first dive was 27 meters and the second only 18.  The water was so rough we lost the ladder which was hanging out the back. The waves would swell onto the boat and a couple of times it felt like we all might go flying off!  It was kind of fun!  Luckily the boat is not just a lancha but pretty big and obviously built for these waters-

Underwater Vision is a diving school with many 'kids' taking their open water, advanced and masters.  It's a really nice place to be!

We went down the street to Mango Tango for lunch.  It's above the water-

Lunch was a delicious salad very well presented-

The Utila Dream ferry will take us to Roatan on Sunday.  After our morning on the rough water, it's obvious why it's the kind of boat it is-

Sunset from paradise-

Looking forward to diving a wreck tomorrow!!

Santiago de Compostela, Spain to North Battleford, Canada

I had a fitful sleep – worrying about waking up at 5:15 which would hopefully give me enough time to have coffee and then start my 1.3 km d...
