Alona Beach, Panglao, The Philippines

I had a restful day doing practically nothing!  I started reading a very interesting book called The Obesity Code by James Fung M.D.  He’s a kidney dialysis specialist in Toronto, trying to explain why we as a people have become obese and it’s certainly not why I thought.  He says  “ Inherited factors account for 70% of obesity, our choices 30%.  Obesity is a hormonal not a caloric disorder.  Calories in = calories out?  No!  With a reduction of intake, body systems adapt and slow down using only the calories available to them.”  And, what’s frightening about this is that when we cut back on calories and our body slows down, most of the time our body never speeds up again so we gain more weight than ever.  I’m just getting to the part where he’s talking about carbs so I’m hoping he has some good advice.  I think he’s going to say we need to cut out refined sugars, which are carbs and do intermittent fasting because most of us are insulin resistant.

I went for a cruise on my bike, found the airport and had lunch at a street booth-

The chicken was good and so were the beans but that other green stuff was disgusting!

I came back to my cool room and read.  Finally at 2 pm I went to the beach for a swim.  The beach part is very nice sand but where the water is, it’s small chunks of coral so a bit hard on the feet however the water was nice and warm.

There were Americans next to me as well as a Polish family.  I have not met one Canadian.

I went back to the bar I was at yesterday and sat in the front corner with a great view of the people walking by.  I visited with a couple from England who had just arrived, an Aussie who has brought her 15 year old grandson here because his father, whom he has never met, is Filipino and she wants to show him his culture and another couple from Australia.  I had a painful experience listening to two Brits talk and get drunker and more stupid as time wore on.

It started raining so I came home, then later found a local chicken booth for supper.  Now I’m back reading.

I fly to Chiang Mai via Manila at 12:30 tomorrow afternoon.  The owners of my bike will meet me at the airport.  I was thinking that yesterday and today will be my only beach days this trip and I’m okay with that.

This makes a lot of sense to me-

Thailand here I come!
