Benin City to Calabar, Nigeria, February 14, 2019

I knew I was in for a bad day.  I set my alarm for 6:30 because we had a 7 am departure.  In spite of going to bed at 9 pm, when I woke up it was light and that's not a good sign.  I looked at my watch and it was 6:55!  I threw my bags together and ran to the idling truck.  No coffee meant a headache which started soon and lasted long into the night.  We had 433 km to go to make Calabar-

And of course our voyage was road dependent but luckily the roads were for the most part pretty good and we pulled in at dusk.  It took quite awhile to find a hotel and for $15/2 people, it's pretty good.  Our goal here is to get our Cameroon visa which we will be attempting tomorrow.

When I wasn't sleeping on the truck, which for some reason was most of the day, I saw what there was to see.  The Niger River is huge-

And so are the garbage dumps which seem to be a fairly new concept in Africa-

Most garbage lies where it's thrown.

The market in Owerri is huge and took forever to get through-

No Coke Zero and no ginger balls.  People are full on too - asking for money or food or just hollering hello and welcome.  It gets so tiring.  We also hear a lot of "white man" and sometimes "white woman"!
We stopped for lunch?? at some small place where there was rice and beans - yuck! so I had an apple, 2 donuts and tried a Bigi-

Recharge your belle?  It was disgusting and I spit it out and later gave it to a cop at a roadside checkpoint.

More roundabout statues-

And this weird hand-

In the middle of nowhere-

Once in my room, I went to bed and slept through the night.  Glad my headache is gone and I'm hopeful for a Cameroon visa today.
