Popayan, Colombia, October 19, 2017

Our first camping spot-

Popayan, population 266,000, is nicknamed La Ciudad Blanca and is a colonial settlement.  It was founded in 1537 and suffered much damage in 1983 from a large earthquake.  It's a university town so there were many students wandering around.

Catedral, in neo classical style, was built between 1859 and 1906-

and was celebrating Corpus Christi-

More white buildings-

Iglesia de San Francisco is the city's largest colonial church-

There was a funeral taking place-

These buses were used to haul coffee from fincas into towns.  Today they're used for local transport-

A fruit stand selling kumquats, strawberries, oranges, very large overripe peas and oranges-

Lunch was the best deal ever:  soup - mazamorra which is made from maíze, pork with rice, beans, plantains and salad as well as guava juice for $1.91!

Looking forward to moving on and getting to Ecuador.  I've booked an 8 day/7 night Galapagos cruise leaving Quito October 26!

P.S.-
